misfire issues
So i just bought a 98 Discovery and it has some issues. When i take it out for a drive it run fines for a couple miles or so, then it starts misfireing badly. The power comes in waves. The CEL was on so i took it to get the codes read. The there were 7 codes, i somehow only managed to write down six. The codes were P0300, P0305, P0304, P1316, P1314, P1313. I think the code i missed was cyl 7 misfire. It also has a high idle issue. The plugs and wires are all new.
thanks for your help. |
Misfires on cylinders 4 and 5. I'm not sure what the P131x codes are. 4 and five are on opposite banks and different coil packs. When was the last time you had a real tuneup with new wires and plugs? Most of us like 8mm magnecor wires ($85 from Apex Performance)

just bought it, previous owner replaced plugs and wires within the last month

What kind of wire though? Regular autozone type wires will last about that long in a Disco's hot engine compartment. You really need to use silicon racing wires like Magnacors or Kingsborne.

im sure all he did was use regular parts store brand wires. it has ngk plugs in it. its been forsale for the past month. i think he replaced the plugs and wires 2ish weeks ago. it hasnt been driven much at all. even with cheapo wires you think they would be junk out of the box?

Just to be safe I'd throw new Magnecore 8mm wires in it. Check if the plugs are fouled, if they are replace. I've heard stories of regular autozone type wires being dead on the inside of a month, so either way you'll need to do it soon.

You could swap the 4 and 3 wire and the 5 and 6 wire and see if your misfire moves. At that point though you might as well change out all the wires as you will be probably doing it in a few months anyway. Another thing you can do is inspect the wires for damage and make sure they are on the plugs and coil tightly. If magncors at $85 are too pricey then check out kingsborne at $45.
On the codes are you sure P1316, P1314, P1313 are the correct codes? I can't find them in the shop manual but they could be fuel injector codes so if the new wires don't do it then it may be your fuel injectors. |
as the guy was reading off the codes rather quickly he was also reading a description of each codes. the P1 codes had something to do with the ignition.

just went out and checked the wire order and they were in the right order. im gonna try swapping a couple wires like you said next. it sucks doing this as Danny is coming ashore, soo much rain and no garage (wet weather might also be a factor? idk, today is only the second day ive driven it and yesterday i only drove it for a couple miles) nothing seems to be getting wet under the hood.
