More driveshaft woes
 

New front driveshaft replaced 150 miles ago. Took her up to 75 mph qnd it felt more like I was holding a 1 bladed weedeater than the steering wheel. Amplitude was getting greater the further I drove. Backed speed down to 55, vibration was there and getting worse by the mile.

Limped home at 35 mph.

Checked, nothing missing, nothing broke. Good thing the shop was closed today.

I get to pull that abortion out again tomorrow, not something I am looking forward to.:mad:

This is not the time to keep secrets. Which one? Then follow up and tell what you found. Got one of those rubber flex couplings at the back shaft? Wheel balance?

I will contact the shop owner tomorrow morning, not going to accuse anyone of wrong doing without giving them a chance to correct it first.

I have owned this Disco for 4 years and mainly use it on trips. Most driving at 75 mph on I-16 in Ga.

Just got back from a trip and heard the "angry birds" but had zero vibes.

I look here and the front drive shaft sounded like a possible source. One U joint had already eaten through a cup and was working on another. Pulled the shaft and replaced Memorial Day weekend.

Drove 100 miles local, no highway just to make sure no further problems. Seemed OK.

Left on trip today and got 20 miles @ 70mph and it started vibrating at road speed, not engine speed. Vibes got worse and worse, thought about calling for a roll back. Got under 40 mph and it was "grindy" but no increasing vibes. Got it home in the repair bay.

I spent 7 years at a Jeep dealership and absolutely hate those carden joints. Seems they are haunting me again.

And on I-16 I have seen this setup at least three times...

Digital DOT road sign is programmed to say something about DL & Insurance check point 2 miles ahead. Off in the distance on a hill top a lone police car has blue light on. Guys take the exit ramp that is like 1/4 mile from the warning sign. Think they dodged a bullet.

At the top of the ramp are all the Dodges with the guys with bullets, and those smokey bear hats. Hello.

Being a Macon boy, I grew up at one end of I-16 and watched it being built, drove cars at high rates of speed on it while it was under construction, then moved to the other end odf it. There are just two McDonalds on that whole stretch of interstate, and the trucks headed to the port in Savannah make it a rough stretch of pavement.

Make sure the shop that rebuilt it did use American made partys and they did replace the centering ball.

May just need greased.
Put a grease gun on the fittings.
Just because it is new - does not mean it was greased enough.

I immediately thought of grease. Did you grease it before you installed it? If it's grinding, it may already be toast.

You mentioned that it was fine when you started out for the first 100 mile trip, then started getting worse. Sounds like it might have been dry and then cooked, then wore out inside. OR, maybe one of the bolts came loose.

When I bought my driveshaft from Tom woods the shop I stalled it I drive out of there got on the hwy and about 90 km h it started vibrating bad
Sent the shaft out to Tom woods for rebalancing got it back no issues

Might just need that

Grease will probably save it.
If that does not work, then it will need balanced.

My drive shaft had a horrible vibration at 65 to 70 MPH.
Greased it.
Vibration went away.
Took about 1,000 miles for the grease to totally work into the joints.

When I installed it, I greased it. All fittings took grease, none were blocked.
