Post Motor turns, faint muffled combustion, wont run

Help. I'm new to beloved Land Rover mechanics. I've inherited a vehicle that "was running, and the motor just stopped" according to the previous owner. It is an amazing, black 2000 Disco II.

-- Motor Turns, I can hear muffled, random, very faint cylinder fires but motor wont run. I've sorted through the various threads but no mentions of the muffled random cylinder firing. Also, I've never heard a rover motor crank before...it sounds very 'electric'

Fuel pump runs, and squirts at the tank....
Fuel at pressure on the fuel rail.
Has Spark (assuming from muffled explosive bangs)
Fires, but wont run with starter fluid
I DONT smell fuel at the tailpipe after an extended crank....
Tried Immobilizer overide 1515 - Could not get vehicle to initialize with a beep to allow the programming
Sifted through RAVE and the sticky on ignition failure.

Immobilizer?
Crank position sensor
Cam shaft position sensor (on bmw this causes poor performance, but motor will run).
Timing Belt?

What would allow fuel pressure at the fuel rail, but not allow the injectors to fire? (

Any thoughts would be most helpful. I might be barking up the wrong tree, but dunno.

What am I missing?

Installed NEW Crank Position Sensor.....No Change.

UPDATE: Checked Fuel Pressure at Fuel Rail - 22psi
Installed new fuel pump - 38 PSI

Motor cranks but will not start. NO change in muffled ignitions.
Has visible spark on all cyclinders.
NO thrown codes

I printed the 1529 page RAVE manual....gonna go digging through it with a beer in hand. Beer always provides insight.
In the interim, if anyone has any great ideas....I'll will send you a whole bag of "awesome" if we can figure this thing out.

UPDATE: Found Overall Poor Compression
cyl 1 - 60 psi
cyl 3 - 120 psi
cyl 5 - 110 psi
cyl 7 - 40 psi
cyl 2 - 60 psi
cyl 4 - 110 psi
cyl 6 - 60 psi
cyl 8 - 120 psi

going to pull the heads, check for warpage, gasket damage.....

Thanks for al the great ideas ideas.....If anyone has seen a similar pattern, I'd be interested in what was discovered.

There is no timing belt.
Crank sensor is bad.

Thx Spike555. I've read your other posts and other references to the CPS being bad. I'll get another one stat and report back.

* forgot to mention earlier, --reset inertia switch.

Cool image in your sig!

Without the crank sensor working the fuel pump will only run for the 5 sec after you turn the key on so no fuel will get to the engine.
The easiest thing to do to check it is to check for spark.
No spark bad crank sensor.

The DII uses a similar engine management to a BMW since LR was owned by BMW at the time.

don't spray starting fluid into the MAF.
May damage the MAF.

Check it for pending codes. There may be some.

Hopefully the spark plugs are on the right wires.

Hopefully the gasoline in it is not 3 years old.

check no one put stuff up the tailpipe.
Or no nests.

If the tailpipe is plugged - muffled bangs and will not start.
Get a coat hanger and check the tail pipe.

Attached is info on the CKP. It is about a $70 sensor. Best test is spare spark plug laid on exhaust manifold after hooking to existing plug wire. If replacing sensor plug it in first, and let it hang down. Every nut and bolt and spacer has to go back exact, spacing is very critical.

UPDATE:

* Starting fluid was sprayed upstream of MAF
* Tail Pipe - Clear
* New Crank Position Sensor - Proper 18mm Spacer (thx SavannahBuzz for the CKP.PDf)
* No codes
* Has Spark!
* Tach drops to Zero after about 5 seconds of cranking
* Fuel Gauge drops to zero after about 5 seconds of cranking

* Fuel 6 months old.

No change in muffled bang sounds....

Any more ideas?

Do you hear fuel pump for those few seconds? Do you see the test port under the rear edge of the intake for the fuel system? Check for fuel pressure? Fuel pump fuse under hood is number 10. You can remove the fuse, insert an amp meter, and see if pump is drawing amps. Should draw for ust a few seconds when key is turned.
