Neapco or Precision U joints and Centering ball?

Is there a preference...
... or is it one of those 6 of one, half dozen of another? the way I understand it is. Neapco 7-0081NG centering kit Neapco PDQ 1005 U joint. OR Precision 344 u joint Precision 617 centering ball kit I believe the joints in my shaft are Neapco...grease fittings on the ends. One of them has "made in the USA" on the end. Removed the shaft today, locked CDL, test drove...the chirping noise is no longer here...I guess that means drive shaft. My joints seems good with no play and are still nice and smooth. I assume the centering ball is at fault here. |
I used the 344 and 617's for my truck.

If you are rebuilding an original equipment prop shaft the u-joints will be the 1300 series (Neapco 1-0005.) I don't know about all aftermarket prop shafts, but my Tom Woods prop shaft uses the larger 1310 series (Neapco 1-0154.) If you don't know, I would measure before buying. A u-joint can be bad and start making noise before showing signs of being loose. I'd replace everything while you have it off the truck.

Take the precision numbers to a local drive line shop and get the Spicer parts.

The Spicer 5-4x are NLA.
You can get Hardy-Spicer from some Rover parts places. I've used both Precision & Neapco. I like the zerks on the end caps for easier greasing. |

Slip Joint Boot

It is a BRD brand joint cover with a large crack.
At this point I think I will go to O'reillys and see if they have it. Unless there is something I am missing online? I guess I could head over to a local driveline place and I would assume they have it in stock? Thanks for the input... No press or or bench vise...not looking forward to doing this job. I am thinking the ole hammer and socket method (heard it called the THOR method) is not going to be easy. |
