need help judging frame rot
Hi All, I'd like to weld reinforcement plates onto the rear portions of the frame, which are showing rot. I've sprayed rust inhibitor but am worried that the rots gone too far...can you help me decide on my next move? Can the frame take the plates or should I think about replacing the entire rear quarter? Here are two pics:

Sorry to say but that frame is toast!
There is no way to weld to that mess because what you see on top of the frame is 100% worse on the inside. Forget even the need for testing with a pick, I'll bet you can put your finger straight through the rusted metal. IMHO please don't waste your time and money on a patch. Also keep in mind normally that type of frame damage will not pass a state safety inspection unless repaired properly. If the truck is in good mechanical shape then consider replacing the complete rear frame section. Good Luck! |
I’m patching my frame as we speak- in considerable worse condition then that.
I was was heart broken to see frame rot I could physically put my fingers thru after removing exhaust. i had several places look at it- several fabricators look into it- and in the end I was able to establish solid steel above the rot. (Where previous post claims its “probably” 100% rotted) So with significant “elbow grease” - I’m going to get some more years out my d2 200k and a Vermont truck most it’s life. Should say it all. i would have to agree w previous post in statement - state wouldn’t have deemed legally safe - and my intentions with rig may be different then yours - but to say it’s toast without further investigation.... Ill post pictures from computer if you’d like Simply speaking from my experience |
They make a couple different lengths of frame sections now. I believe I saw them on Rovers North site.

They could have put what was on the Gas Tank on the frame. That looks great.
