Default New 1996 Disco I

Hi All!

I've been watching the board for some time and have to admit I am very glad to have joined.

So, I just bought a 1996 Disco I with 131,000 miles, a 3" lift, All-Terrain Tires and Street Tires for $1,500. I am thrilled to say the least.

Here are a few things i have noticed with it, please feel free to comment:

1. When going 50 - 53 mph it will shift from 4th to 5th gear and 5th to 4th gear many times within ten minutes. If I go 55 or above it stays in 5th just fine.

2. My ignition will lock when i park with my wheel turned. It will take alot of turning the whell with force to unlock it and start agian.

3. The joints underneath the truck are very very greasy, is this good?

4. Did i get a good deal? The carfax is clean, the last owner was a Land Rover Mechanic, and it seems to run very well.

Thanks and look forward to talking,

1 the torque converter locks around 53. It is just your converter locking up, not actually shifting. Try not to hang out there...

Do a search for the 60K service on here. Unless you know these things have been done, do them....

Does that mean don't go above 50, or just dont hang out between 50-55? How serious is the Torque Coverter. What pre-emptive actions can be taken to aviod further issues with it?

thanks,

The torque convertor is what makes the automatic transmission work with the engine.

It is a good thing. It helps improve your MPG. To put it simply, it is a fluid clutch.

What OKDGUY means is dont drive at a speed that allows the toqure convertor to continually lock and un-lock, the transmission will run hot if you do.

You have a 4 speed transmission, the toqure convertor makes it feel like a 5 speed.
