New to here, and new to Land Rover
 

Greetings everyone. I just recently found a 2003 discovery with 45,000 miles on it for $25,000. I am probably trading my 01 dodge ram 1500 for it. I only know one person with Land Rover, and it's a freelander at that. I have read 15 pages back on this forum, and it sounds like alot of little stuff breaks on the Discoverys'. I want to know what I am getting into with this vehicle. It's going to be my wifes daily driver, and now the 4x4. I'm not too concerned about it as being strictly a 4x4, but when i do go wheelin' i hit it pretty hard. My 01 ram has 10 inches of lift and 37" tires, so im used to the 4x4 scene. I realize this is not an american vehicle, but i read a couple posts that said some parts were GM??? if that's true, what parts. How would you rate the discovery against other SUV's, say the Tahoe or the newer durango's. Not as far as luxury, but as far as reliability. My wife wants luxury, i want reliability! I bought my 03 for $5,000 120,000 miles. paid 1,300 on exstended warrenty. The 4.6 is gm. Mine runs great. after a few repairs loving my rids

Even with the low miles that price seems a bit strong to me. Is there a lot of extras on it?

Are you sure you haven't got one too many zero's in that price, personally I would be very suspicious of the mileage and secondly I could have bought you 4 kosher D2's for that price. I assume you got it from a dealer?

As far as parts breaking, no they don't if it's been maintained correctly and the original V8 engine many years ago was a Buick but the current run of engines, 4.0 and 4.6, are Rover and everything else is Rover supplied and nothing, absolutely nothing is GM as original equipment.

Sorry, but I can't get over the $25K for a truck that's never gonna be a 'classic' (too many made) and 13+ years old and you never did any research on the D2 before buying it. :laugh:

Not sure how to base prices regarding these trucks now. A friend of mine bought a 2004 disco for the same price with 15k miles only, but that was over 10 years ago.

Hi Brian, for a 2003/4 top quality, high spec, standard, low mileage D2 it would maybe fetch tops, £5,000 or $6,000 to $6,500 USD. In the UK a V8 sells far lower than a TD5 due to the poor mileage and high petrol cost, so in the UK and europe a TD5 is far more valuable.

Do not pay $25k for a 14 year old Land Rover.

I think D2's will eventually become classic's. Sure they may have made a lot, but how many are actually in original condition, well maintained, and still driving? Ford Mustangs, Dodge Chargers, Camaro's, = made a lot of them, but they're now classic's.

A D2 may never hit $100,000.00 collectible classic status, but in the sea of bland SUV's a D1/D2 is already a classic 4x4.

I'd never pay more than 10K for an 04 D2 with tons of aftermarket goodies, and a perfect engine, but I'm seeing a lot of them from Houston, TX trying for 12-25K and those D2's are NOT by any means perfect. A fool is born everyday and some of those fools will pay 25K for a D2 with a gas can on top, and some chinese off road lights...
