The $9K job! going solo!
Thanks for the call, I'm taking your advice and putting my mechanic wanna be hat! I'm planning to start Friday, and hope to be done by Sunday. Most of you probably will do it in 1/2 day
My info list so far:
a) 60k Service and more for used vehicles
b) How to bleed the cooling system on a DII (Thanks Spike555)
c) How to flush the break fluid
d) How to change transmission fluid on a DII
e) Owner Maintenance doc
f) Discovery workshop manual
Questions?
Any info on how to flush the ACE and steering fluid (w/ pics will be great!-newbie ?
what is "service the tranny"?
does t/stat means thermostat?
what's an induction cleaning?
how do I clean the throttle body?
is the transmission fluid the same as diffs fluid?
I recently change oil and filter. Does any of this force me to do it again?
Mike does t/case oil means transmission case oil?
Aside from the spark plug tool, do I need any other special tool?
sorry for all the questions, but wont happen again when I reach 150k miles...
auto info:
Discovery 2003 SE V8, Automatic transmission, 84k miles.
Recent jobs: Oil/Filter change, new air filter, new front break pads, new O2 sensors.
thank you all!

The easist way to flush the Ace fluid I assume is to dilute by pumping out the oil fluid and adding new. Do this a few times with a short drive between and you are gtg.
Tstat = thermostat
Induction cleaning is hooking up a "slow drip IV" of sea foam into your upper IM plenum vacuum port to clean out your upper engine. It's good fun driving around with smoke billowing from your truck afterward. Highly recommended BTW.
Look at the stick to see how to clean your throttle body. Pretty much take the air hose off and spray the throttle body with Carb cleaner
NO!! Gear oil is way different than ATF. Read your manual!!!
I would hold off on the induction cleaning until your next oil change

On the 60k service there is not mention of changing the transmission filter, but I found comments about it. Since I'm already at it, should I change it?
thanks

Almost there...one more left!
Hi Mike,
A few weeks since last time we spoke- I hope everything is going well for you!
Well, I did all fluids, ignition wires, spark plugs, etc(60k service). I got a P0430 code today after the error got deleted 'cause "ignition wire" replacement. It was there before I performed all services, so no surprice.
I'm planning to drive to San Francisco next week, not sure even if I will have time to do anything about it but would like to know what could be the problem beside the code information.
Any suggestions?
Auto info:
2003 Discovery SE 85,000 miles
Work performed last 3 months:
- Air filter
- 4 x O2 sensors
- +4s spark plugs
- Magnacore ignition wires
- break pads
- Temperature sensor
- Wiper blades
- Belt
- 60K Service
thanks,
Joseph
