OBD2 scanner?
Yes, I did a search, but I really couldn't find much on what I needed to know. I'm new to the Disco, as of 12 hours ago. Have a 2001. Need a scanner/code reader. Anyone use the Harbor Freight? I'm guessing only some brands will work with the D2.
Help ASAP please. Have check engine light and need to get through CT emissions to get this registered. Thanks |
Greg,
To get your codes read quickly, just go to Napa or Autozone. The reason for a more advanced code reader is really to diagnose the ABS. |
As mentioned go to an auto parts store if you just want to read codes, but if you are planning to keep the Disco for a while it's wise to invest in a decent scanner for $100-$150 that will read codes & live data & can do ABS, you will use it much more than you might think ( & it will pay for itself very quickly) rather than a cheap one,
There are quiet a few choices to choose from, I have the (icarsoft-930) for land rover's & it has paid for itself many, many times over, |
I disagree on getting an expensive one. I've been using a $12 Bluetooth OBD scanner with a $5 "Torque Pro" app on an android phone for three years or something. 10/10 would recommend. I use it all the time for scanning codes and watching live engine data.

OK all, I just answered my own question. Talked to three auto supply and they confirmed that any new reader will read any OBD2. Now that I have a Disco, with all my reading and research, I feel that a reader is a must in the toolbox.
So, after seeing very good reviews on the Harbor Freight readers, I bought the "Pro". Works great. $99 USD |
Can the scanners without the LR software still clear the codes, not just read them?
|
I have an UltraGage too, but have yet to use it, Disco not finished.
The UG reads codes also. |
I have an Ultragauge and love it! It will read error codes and clear them. However, it will not perform programming tasks (i.e., turn on daytime running lights).

I bought a Hawkeye too. I'm keeping the UG, and am in the process of returning the Hawkeye(as it cannot program keys as it says, which was main reason I got it). |
