Occasional groaning noise from steering gear
Now to pick you guys brains again.
When I turn the steering wheel at very low speeds (but never on full lock) sometimes I get a 'groaning noise' from the steering gear. It's either the PAS pump or the steering box. It never happens at higher speeds only at very slow speeds when maneuvering. I have tried to find it by listening what exactly it is but unless I stuff the wife under the hood to listen (and I can assure you she will object ) it's very difficult to identify from where.
Has anyone else experienced a similar type of noise?

Typical of steering boxes as they wear. Someone recently did a good write-up (now a sticky, I believe) on how to do a full flush and fluid replacement. I did a partial flush/replacement on mine using high-mileage steering fluid and the noise is gone.

My truck's power steering has made the groaning noise as long as I can recall and I've had it close to 15 years and ~137,000 miles.
It groans only when I make a fairly sharp turn immediately after a cold start and I've always been curious but I've never obsessed about it. In my experience there are enough real problems with the DII that I'm not worrying about the truck saying "hello" when we start out together. Maybe it's the truck's way of welcoming me.

What fixed it was a flush and new fluid.

X1 .......... I'll go along with that one. I reckon you guys are right, it seems when I first pull away and near full lock when the PAS oil is still cold. I reckon an oil flush and change might do the trick .............. hopefully
PS Just a quick observation, my truck is just shy of 137K miles now.
