P0455 and $90 Smoke Tests...

I got my first SEL 3 months back, P0441, swapped the purge valve with the Hyundai model and it worked like a charm.

Yesterday I got my 2nd, P0455, and I have been reading up in the forum trying to determine next steps:

1. What is the consensus on the gas cap being the culprit and is there any way to determine if it is bad short of replacing it?

2. Could there be any relation to the P0441 and the P0455 codes?

3. What is the going rate for a smoke test? Just had a mechanic tell me $90, hoping he was blowing smoke...

The truck is running great and my next emissions checkup is 16 months away so nearest I can figure this is not mission critical, I just want to get this taken care of because rebalancing my carbon credits is such a PITA:)

I just picked up a 2004 SE7 and the guy I bought it from told me about the gas cap needing cranked down good or the light will come on. 2 days later the service engine soon light came on and of course I got worried. I have an ultragauge and hooked it up to find code P0455. I turned off the light and checked the cap - on mine the cap clicks before the cap is fully seated. I have to push down hard while turning it and it goes another full revolution or two before it clicks again. I have not had the light come back on, so I think that was it......

If you can't find the leak, and it is not the gas cap, then $90 labor is a fair price.

Mike, should I start with a new Gas Cap? Anyway to know if it is bad?
Catman, how long since you cleared the code?
I think it takes a few drive cycles to register.

i think the gas cap theory is BS. i have an evap leak now, its either the purge valve or an actual hole at the neck. i have not had time do dive into it yet because i have a bigger problem on my hands with the starter that melted and my truck wont start without a hot lead from the battery to the starter.

Same here. I have not bothered to replace it yet, have never set a code, and don't mind the strange looks at the station when I squat down after filling up and replacing the cap to make sure it's seated properly.

It has only been about a week. The guy I bought it from had the DTML valve replaced in late April, so I sort of ruled that out, but then again, you never know! I am still learning what to look for with this thing!

I am no expert, but it says right in the owners manual that if the gas cap is not tightened properly the service engine soon light may come on.....

well yeah, if the f'n thing doesnt fit correctly that could cause a problem cuz the system is under pressure. if your cap doesnt fit or you don't have a cap, then get a new one....
