picked up my 2002 Discovery yesterday.

Hi everyone, I just picked up my discovery a little over 24 hours ago. It is awesome. The vehicle is big but the driver's seat and controls fit like a glove. It is awesome. It, however, didn't come with an owner's manual. and I have a few questions. What is the downhill button for? and 2) how does the sport mode different than the regular mode? I have noticed a problem though. I took it up to my vacation house which is about two hours away. on the highway(mostly state routes) I get a wobble from the sterring wheel around 47-50 and then goes away at highway speeds(hence why I said state routes) It doesn't happen all the time at the speed. I had a similar problem on my jeep grand cherokee that had the dreaded "death wobble" but that was b/c I fitted bigger tires on it with a moderate lift and it messed up the angles of the steering components. The Discovery is completely stock. What could be causing this? At any other time, it is perfectly fine, it's just that 4-5 mile margin that it happens. I though unbalanced tires possibly, but that shouldn't cause this. Any help?

Thanks, and again, hello

-Michael

Congrats on the new purchase and welcome to our little forum.
The little down hill button is for the Hill Decent Control, when you are off roading and need to go down a steep hill you put the transfer case in low, press the button and take your foot off the gas and brake, the HDC will take you down the hill at 5mph.
The sport mode holds the transmission in gear longer before it up shifts to the next higher gear, it also down shifts sooner for a "sportier" feel.
It will use more gas in sport mode.
As for the wobble, replace your steering damper. Then have your tires looked at.
You know that the truck requires premium gas right?

thanks for the info. what would cause it to only happen in that 5mph range?

So with this wobble the steering wheel vibrates? Do you feel it anywhere else? Your seat? Does the rearview mirror shake?

yes, the sterring wheel vibrates(more of a wobble back and forth) and you can slightly feel it in the seat, but I'll have to check the review mirror

Sounds like your tires are out of balance.

red, i have the exact same problem with my 03' at the same range. i can only feel it in my steering wheel though. LR techs didnt find anything wroung. i driven mine for 10k miles now, and it hasent gotten better, or worse. so im just going to leave it.

REMEBER USE 91 OCTANE OR BETTER! ITS WORTH IT! and change your oil every 3k miles, never let it go over 4k miles.

LAND ROVERS ARE ALL ABOUT PREVENTITIVE MATNICE :D:D:D.

I've put 93 in it so far. Luckily for me the price of premium has gone down to 2.25 at home and 2.19 at where my mountain house is. i can't wait for some snow. The size of the passenger and cargo area will pay off when I go skiing

one more thing: What does the little highway button do? It's on the right side of the instrument cluster. I know in my brother's range rover it drops it down a couple inches but I think that mine has the coil conversion it non-applicable anymore

That is the master power switch for the cruise control, push it in and forget about it.
