Please reply to this post- TIRES
I have been through other threads and have not seen consistent answers
on tires that will fit the 99-04 Discovery without a lift. I know any larger tires will impact speedo, axles, brakes, etc. I am pretty sure that 265/60/18 will be just fine with no rubbing. What I am looking at is the Nittos in 285/60/19 which in addition to being a bit wider still, is also 2.5 inches bigger in diameter than the stock 255/55/18. I have measured the various areas of the wheel well and trim and it would "appear" that they will fit and maybe just rub a bit with agressive off roading, which I do not do. If ANYONE has any personal experience with the larger tires without a lift please reply to this post. I am days away from having to make a purchase decision. Thanks in advance ! |
RE: Please reply to this post- TIRES
265/75-16 is what is recommended for a lifted suspension--stock should be 255/55-18...so I do not know exactly, but i would guess the aspect ratio needs to be dropped to 45 for 19' rims...so stock width is 9.94 inches with sidewall 5.5 inches on a rim of 18=33" of tire, which is pretty big....what you want to put on is 10.92 inches, with a sidewall of 6.7 inches on a rim of 19=36" of tire....i think my calculations are pretty accurate (as they basically mirror yours, just with more mumbo jumbo), and 36 seems WAY too big to me for anything not lifted. Why are you having to get such a large size anyway, if you really do not do any off roading? I know that the DII can take just about anything, I am limited on my D1 to about 33" maximum or rubbing starts, but honestly, I would recommend you do not get these tires. Get something that will be a little bit smaller, if you honestly cant get a 275 or so size, and you really want them, then go for it, you should be ok, hopefully someone will direct experience of this size tire on your truck will chime in...

RE: Please reply to this post- TIRES
Thanks for the input. i think we are off on some of our measurements. The stock
255/55/18 is 29" in diameter. the 265/60/18 are 31.4 and the 285/60/18 are 32.5. I want to go bigger than the stock 29" for appearance and a little lift without doing a lift. I do actually go offroad a bit. Just none of the mondo rock climbing I know that some of you do out there. I do also want to have a bit more width for on road handling, though I know I will pick up more road noise. These Wrangler HPs that come stock are just not very good tires. Poor braking, poor dry traction, very poor wet traction and non existing snow traction. I live in a four seasons area of the northwest so I am trying to balance my needs across the seasons. Thanks again for you input. Anyone else out there with a Series II Discovery that can chime in on what can go on without any major rubbing ???[&:][&:] |

http://www.discoweb.org/ the bulletin board there has a guy in the discovery technical section that put on nitto 285/60/18 and they for sure rub a little bit...he says like a few MM's, and he will need to lift the truck eventually....I think this is a good indication you will have some issues...you will also not be able to put one on the rear spare mount, apparently they are too big, you can do a complicated procedure to flip the spare tire carrier around though its not the easiest...i suggest you go to that bulletin board and locate the thread "New 285/60/18 Nitto's installed
