Power Loss
i posted a question a while back:
https://landroverforums.com/m_60659/tm.htm i tried almost all of your advices except changing the stepper motor. i went on a long vacation and its only now that i can focus my attention on my LR. i still maintain a very high idleing, close to 1k rpms. any lower and the engine dies when i turn the ac on. the thing is, i don't think its the stepper motor. when i shift, particularly when im in low gear, the trk loses power. i mean i can feel and hear it starting to stall. even the ac fan slows down. i cant get my foot off the gas otherwise the engine dies. and thats not from a cold start either. will replacing the stepper motor help in this situation? the plugs and wires are also relatively new but im sure the previous owner just put in the cheap ones. do you think its one of the possible causes of the power loss?? im planning to put in platinum plugs and magnecor wires. i read a lot of good things about em here. im sure it will greatly improve my trks performance but i wanna fix all the problems first b4 i do any modifications. also, i remember one of the mechanics i went to said that the alternator (or it might have been the compressor he was pointing at) on my trk is only 1200(W??). he mentioned sumthin about the 96 models overheating here in the middle east so they had to replace the 1600 thats built-in to 1200s. i don't know if there is any truth in this at all and quite frankly i barely understand it so i wanna confirm it with you guys. im still very new to all of this and generally takes the mechanic's word for it. im doing my best to learn and i need all the help i can get. good thing you guys are there! |
RE: Power Loss
Don't know about your previous tread nor do I know anything about the D1 Gems engines, but I had a similar problem on an old Jeep of mine, and it ended up being afailing EGR valve ( vaccum related) where the ball in it would stick. I'm sure Spike or Mike will tell if it would apply to you or not.

RE: Power Loss
Ifa GEMS engine will not idle it is the stepper motor, all DI's have the GEMS engine.
The lower the engine RPM the less amps the alternator puts out, so your A/C fans will slow. I believe that LR's have a 120 amp alternator, so I do not know what your mechanic is talking about. And yes, replacing the plugs and wires is never a bad idea. Use the Magnacors. |
RE: Power Loss
i just replaced the stepper motor. Guess what?? NO CHANGE!! Grrr! Ok... the prob is most probably fuel system related right? I sumtimes notice that the exhaust is dirty. I mean it spurts out oily soot. Does that mean that its not combusting properly? And if so, is it because its not getting enough air? And why does it occur only when the ac is on? I guess the only way to describe it is its not putting out enough juice when the ac is on. But otherwise its running perfectly. The problem is hard to ignore. The temp here is getting close to 50 degrees celsius and rising so you see, the ac is indispensible. HELPPPPPPPPPP!!!!:( |
RE: Power Loss
Have you changed your air filter? A clogged airfilter will cause it to run rich, if it runs to rich then the fuel will not combust properly.
Re-read your first post, I suppose that if your alternator wasnt putting out like a homecoming queen and the A/C was on that your spark could be weak and then the trk could stall. But I would check the airfilter first, and then have the alternator and battery tested. |
RE: Power Loss
I like air filters, they help my cars a lot, i recomend using one.

ORIGINAL: 99LRDisc I like air filters, they help my cars a lot, i recomend using one. theres really no need to be sarcastic. i admit that i am very new at this. thats why i go to this forum to ask for assistance. still, i am very greatful for all the help. i want to learn and i need all the help i can get |
RE: Power Loss
wasnt being as sarcastic to you as i was to myself. I dont know anything about this stuff, i try to substitute my lack of knoledge with humor

RE: Power Loss
its ok man. i kid around myself most of the time. i just thought that most of the guys here are TOO OLD AND GRUMPY to throw jokes at!! LOL
and i think im gonna get kicked out of the forum for that! LOL :D |
RE: Power Loss
You might want to try changing the plug wires. It is very easy to do on a DI. Since the previous owner just used cheap ones.
Go to www.roverconnection.com or www.atlanticbritish.com and buy a set of Magnacor wires. Have you changed the fuel filter since youvebought the trk? |
