Problem with a V8 petrol engine.
Hello everyone,
My question is regarding a 95 model discover with a 3.9 Liter V8 petrol engine. Does anyone heard of a problem of cylinder#8 "sinking" and cooling water goes into the cylinder from the gap between cylinder6&8. I've been told that this is a "known" problem of this kind of engine and there is nothing that can be done beside replacing it. Is there a way to fix it otherwise? Thanks. |
Sure you can overheat the engine bad enough and the steel cylinder liner can slip as they are just press fit in. You can fix it but unless you do the work yourself (pulling the engine, stripping the block, then paying big money to get a new sleeve put in, reassembling the engine and reinstalling) it is cheaper to buy a used engine.

This is an aluminum engine with steel liners. When overheated, the liner will drop and the engine is toast. It is more to put in a new liner than you can replace the block for.
