Questions about this tired 4.0
 

Just wondering if they sell a kit to get a small block ford V8 to fit in a DI? The reason I ask is that my 4.0 has 160k on it and feels tired. The motor runs well, has had a recent tune-up and had the head gaskets replaced a little over a year ago. However the motor just doesn't have any torque and struggles to go up hills or even accelerate once out of first. I would think it was just a Land Rover thing but my cousin's 99 DII 4.6 is a totally different truck.

I would just swap in a 4.6 but its a little pricey so I might as well drop in a motor that I know in and out and could build blind-folded. Before everyone lectures me I will not be hot rodded the truck, I would just build a torque EFI 5.0 or 5.8. And with all the left over mustang parts I have laying around the motor and wiring will cost almost nothing, its just the misc stuff that will add up.

My question is does someone make a kit to mount this motor in my Disco and to the trans? Has anyone seen it done? If I can get it mounted in the wiring would be no problem.

What grade of gas are you running?
Mine with 178,change has plenty of power, I cant race a fighter jet but she'll pull a house off the foundation.

Pretty much any engine swap besides a LR engine is going to require you to completely rebuild the drivetrain and suspension. The axles and shafts were not meant to handle the power that the domestic V8s put out.

If you're really lacking a lot of power from the LR 4.0 you can get it all back, it's just a matter of finding where it's going to. Clean your engine inside and out, all parts of it. Upgrade all the fluids in the truck to synthetics, use the highest grade gas you can find. Swap anything that's starting to get old. You can always get a LR 4.0 back up to speed, these engines last 300,000 or more miles.

Did your cousin have the 4.6 swapped in? The engine in the 99 D2 is a 4.0 just like yours. The 4.6 didn't find its way into the Discovery until 2003.

Go through the 60K service on your truck and I bet you'll get back a lot of the power you're lacking. New plugs and wires and induction cleaning make a huge difference. There is some debate about what plugs are best but pretty much everyone agrees the Magnecor 8mm wires are the way to go.

Some reading material to get you started. There is other stuff online too, mostly British and Aussie sites. Personally, I think an engine swap (other than a 4.6) is more trouble than it's worth. I guess the engine management systems and increased weight are the big limitations. Still, I often wish I could just drop a Chevy 4.3 V6 into mine, or a TDI.....

He says its a 4.6, I'll check as soon as I can. I run 91 octane, thats premium in California. I'll do the 60k service soon and then I'll give an update.

To all who own DIIs with 4Liters:

Please do not envy the 4.6L v8.

I own both, and I can tell you that the difference is marginal. Mine definitely has more power when you're already doing 60 or 70 (power to quickly increase speed, that is), but it's REALLY not anything to be bummed about.

The guy who owned the 2000 with the 4.0 L maintained it REEAALLY well (he only sold it when he found an '04 in South Africa with 12k miles on it that he had shipped here), as did the previous owner of my '04.

I'm convinced both are at least 95% as powerful as they were off the factory, and I'm pretty sure it would be a close race.
