Rad and Fan
 

Anyone done the electric fan conversion? Got a source for them in North America? Would love to lose the viscous fan in this sometimes cold climate ;)

From other posts I have read, most people don't have good results with this conversion, fans won't draw enough air to keep the engine at it's proper temp in warm weather. If you are having fan noises you might want to replace the clutch, I have never heard mine running even when running trails in Death Valley.

I was thinking that might be the case. I'm going to look into custom rads as well then. Having a dual fan setup and higher capacity rad would be nice in really warm climates as well.

What year is your truck and where do you live that it is that hot?

It's a 2003, but my main objective is to make it so it can go anywhere. I live in Ottawa where the temperatures vary from -40 to +40 so half the year the viscous fan saps heat from a cold engine as well as power, and the other half it's on full most of the time so again pulling power.

If I was going to leave things stock I'd leave it because it's clearly not worth the money and effort, but I'm looking at putting a RPI 4.6 or 4.8 tuned engine in possibly next year and at that point it'll be needed for sure.

While in the southwest, and other desert climates it would also help. In Malaysia just about every competition vehicle (Rainforest Challenge) had fitted a second rad in the back to help get rid of heat in the 37 degree heat.

I'm going to fit a few themometers to various components first though, as well as installing an oil temperature gauge. It may in the end make more sense just to upgrade the oil cooler.
