Radiator busted
Hi all, 4 weeks ago I got myself a 2001 Disco2 TD5 and love it! But 3rd time in the bush a rock or stick came through (not impressed with the guards underneath) and the fan smashed it in the near new radiator. Loss of coolant in an instant, without me noticing. Motor stalled (I think it went into limb mode, is this correct?) then I noticed temperature gauge ABOVE red! After panic settled and a tow home it's time to replace rad, lots of helpful hints here, thanks. I have RAVE manual but only Disco2 part, is full one (520MB)needed? Have problems reaching lower bolts and connection to A/C unit. Next question, do I have to worry about my head gasket/motor or does limb mode prevent damage? Any precautions I have to take? I guess I take one step at a time and see how it goes after rad replacement. Great forum, good on ya.

yeah you need the full 520mb RAVE. If it's still running it's probably ok..most people on here including myself have never seen a TD5 much less been lucky enough to own one. :p

Your diesel engine did not go into limp mode, only a tranny can do that. If your engine quit, there is a good chance you locked up your engine from excessive heat.

You are fine, the TD5 has a limp mode to reduce power and prevent the engine from destroying itself.
Replace the radiator, buy a skid plate for the front and go have fun man!! Also check the engine fan for damage. |
Thanks everyone for the reply. There seem to be different views on limb mode. The reason I think it has one apart from hope is that first the power dropped and it didn't take the gas anymore. The motor still idled for a short while and then stopped, like the fuel was cut. I try to find out from the local LR and post here my findings. Cheers, Ian

Spike, where did you find that information.
My concern is that the engine did quit and as hot as it got there really isn't anything that will shut the engine off but seizing up. |
I got that info Mike from my experience with modern diesels as well as talking to people in the UK with TD5's, not only in LR's but Mercedes and BMW's too.
Almost all modern diesels have a limp mode for the engine, diesels do not run as hot as a petrol engine and they can take the heat better than a petrol engine too. In order to protect the engine the ECU is programmed to go into limp mode under certain conditions, like a overheat or low oil PSI. It reduces engine power (so you can get off the road) and then shuts the engine off to keep it from self destructing. Once it shuts itself off you can reset the limp mode by turning the ignition off, waiting a few seconds and they restarting the engine, however it will go back into limp mode unless the problem is solved and continually doing this may harm the engine. |
