Rear Door Rattle
 

I recently bought a 99 D1 and I notice the rear door makes a bunch of noise. I was thinking it was the side storage bins but I rode back there and to my surprise it 90% the rear door.

Its as if the doors is not tight on the latch or something. Or it could be some mechanicals inside the door. Either way I ear a bunch of rattles and thumps over bumps and also squeaks.

Is there some way to adjust how tightly the clamp holds?

Interestingly, after washing it last night the squeaks stoped and the car didn't sound like it was falling apart. I'm sure the door (or spare cover it thats the culprit) still thumped on big jolts but it was much better. This made me wonder if its the weather stripping or the latch needs WD-40!

Anybody else had this issue?

When the door is closed can you push it in? Can you pull it up? There is a way to adjust the latch, but make sure it is fully closed.

Clean the weatherstripping with a clean rag and soapy water, then wipe down with silicon spray or Armor All. Doors move in relation to the body when the vehicle is moving so you will get sqeeks if the weatherstripping is dirty.

I have the same problem with mine. I've got two temporary fixes that seem to work.

1.) Loosen the strike plate screws and push up on it as far as it will go, then tighten the screws down. I don't really get how that works (a friend showed me that) because the screws are counter sunk, but I've done it 3 or 4 times and it seems to work.

2.) Wrap some electrical tape around the little strike plate thing. 2 or 3 times around is all you need. After a while the tape does get tore up, and you'll have to replace it. I do the tape thing while I'm out 4 wheeling. Afterword when I wash my Disco I take the tape off and do option #1


Around town driving #1 works for a few months. #2 works longer, looks uglier (the wife will notice), and holds up better while off-roading.

That's what works for mine.

Yeah, make sure the striker is fully engaged, and you can adjust the rubber wedge the door fits into as well...

Your cargo door hinges may be weak/worn out, NEVER hang on the door when it is open, NEVER open the door with anything more than the spare tire and a rear ladder on the door.
Do like these guys said first before you look into worn out hinges.

You can make adjustments from both sides of the locking mechanism.. The Door side and the Strike side.. I had to tighten mine up, in fact it was missing a screw when I got it, I adjusted 3 of the four passneger doors as well, now it has much less wind noise on the highway..

Thanks for all the feedback. So how exactly do we adjust the plates? Prepilot, when you say push the strike plate up as far as it will go do you mean vertically up or forward as in toward the front of the car?

Also when we adjust the both sides is the object to push them further apart so they are harder to make clamp and thus squeeze tighter?

Can we confirm "how to" such as:

Door side latch: Pull back as in toward the rear of the truck

Strike Plate: Push forward as in toward teh front of the truck

Triangle Thingy: Not sure?

Start with making sure the latch screws are tight..
Next loosen the post on the Truck side and push it toward the front of the truck and tighten, see how that works for ya

Yeah, 'up' as in vertical. Toward the roof. It doesn't seem to move much when I do it, but the squeak stops. It's weird.

It seems to have worked. I could tell the minute I closed the door... I had to close it harder to get it to take and it seemed to thump more tightly.
