Default Rear Step Question

So just a quick question. My 96 Disco SE7 has the rear step. Is it supposed to be hydraulic? Mine just hangs there and swings up on a hinge if the back drops on something. I don't see any kind of hydraulics but I have seen others mention theirs before so.....anyway thanks.

yup, it's SUPPOSED to be hydraulic.....there's a gas filled mini strut hooked to it that is supposed to lift it back up when you get off of it, I'm not sure there's a good answer here....most of us have fixed them only to find that it fails again some time later. My kids use it, or I probably would have removed it long ago. It IS a great conversation piece, though !!

Take it off. The cylinder is $100 to re-build the step. It will be one of the first things you smash if you go offroad.

Perfect. Exactly what I needed to know guys. Thanks a million for the replies. This is a perfect example of why this forum is great. Quick, succinct replies to questions. I think I will leave it alone for the time being as it is not in the way (not much off roading with it yet) and there are lots of things higher on the list for now (like that dang power steering box I mentioned in another thread). Thanks again!

What is white shepard and where do I get it? Can it be had at NAPA or Autozone or somebody like that? Thanks for the suggestion.

It is an additive that helps stop leaks....swells the seals a little
Advance auto has it ~~$22.00 bottle, our NAPA used to carry it but I havent seen it there recently

Thanks. I will look into it. Does it work better than Lucas, cause the Lucas didn't even slow the leak.
