Default rebuilding motor...i have some questions

i got this 98 block from D1 at the machine shop now getting bored, honed, and cleaned. We're not sure if the crank is ok or not yet. assuming it isn't, can I get the 4.6 crank/push rods/pistons and pop in there to stroke it out? if we like this idea, where is a good afforrdable place to buy them?

Also, where's the best place to buy engine rebuilding kits? We're going through everything, and throwing away the EFI, going straight 4 barrel carbs and distributor...what a beautiful thing.

Besides that sort of work will nearly excede the valve of your truck, your tranny and spider gears won't take that sort of power bump.
Why not drop in a 4.6 short block and a cam and be happy?

The least expensive way to get that crank and rods would be out of a junk engine and have them cleaned up by a machine shop.
If you want some power, look at a cam, lifts and HD springs, mabey clean out the heads so they breathe better.

If you use a long stroke crank you will need shorter rods.

Yes you can throw in a 4.6 cam and crank.
Thats all a 4.6 is, is a stroked 4.0.

I do not know if a 4.6 has a longer or shorter throw than a 4.0 or not, but if you use 4.6 rods then that is a non issue.
Unless you can find out for 100% that the 4.0 and 4.6 use the same rods.

The cam I have is aftermarket and more beefy already. I just need to figure out the bottom end. Do I also need the flywheel and what not from a 4.6 crank if I find one? a friend told me if I switch cranks i have to get the all the bolt on parts that match it. (besides connector rods)

I'm going to call around to the local salvage yards for a 4.6 Crank/rods/pistons. What years can I ask for that will work in my 98 disco 1. (i have the gems engine.)
