Reliability
I am looking at getting a 95-98 discovery with anywhere from 70-110k miles. How well do these hold up as daily drivers. Any serious problems with them?

RE: Reliability
Mine is a 98 with 80k now, i have had my fan clutch lock up which caused it to grenade, and just did a fuel pump, but other than that i would give it a 7 out of 10 for reliability @80k, prolly a lil' less @ 100k.

Well what's your tolerance to pain? I have had mine (98 Disco with 98K) for 8 months and so far. Fixed door window actuator, thermostat, o2 sensor, hub gasket, exhast manafold (cracked in 1/2), and transfer case gasket. But I like working on mine and get statisfaction from the cars performance.

RE: Reliability
I guess (shoot me) I am sold on Toyota's my 91 toyota has over 250, 000 miles on it and runs perfect and has been no trouble, Other Toyotas in the family do equally well. On the other hand I just got a Discovery (97) upon the death of a family member and I had forgot the number to AAA and the hassle of dealing with mechanics.until now.
In a lot of ways I like the Discovery and for off roading it might have a great advantage but ,I'm not as passionate as most of your are. I had all kind of minor problems with this 34000 mile Discovery and was stranded a few times and the rattles drove me crazy, perhaps that is part of the charm. My Old time 'hillbilly neighbor" with a mountain side of his own swears by a 65 Ford truck and a wench on the front bumper , he say's If can't get there with 2 wd drive and wench your in quicksand. He also 'laughs as neighbors of ours sepend $1000's on 4wd repairs . Perhaps we missed the point? Good luck all. |
RE: Reliability
Rovers like most vehicles tend to run as they have been maintained. I have a 96 disco. 130k with minor troubles. including tires and brakes, and maintainence I have spent about 5000.00 over a ten year period. The only problem for real was a steering gear box. never stranded. Mine has served me well for 10 years and I expect another 10 maybe. I am very severe with maintenance. by the book and then some, if you buy one, do only with verified maintainence, and records. otherwise stay away. rovers are not cheap. If you get hold of one that has not been taken care of, you will be in a world of hurt. They have some quirks, most of those are diy stuff and can be found here at the forum. Welcome to the forum. gotta love a rover. duboff
