replacing the engine oil with Coastal SAE 85W-140

Got a PM with above text from a forum member who was doing his first oil change and we had lost something in translation. 85W140 is gear oil for transfer case and differentials, better to use 15W40 Shell Rotella in the engine.

I hope he gets back to you Buzz. Course he may find the cure for our tick with that oil.

I replied to his PM, just hope he waiting on a response, I've been at offspring's college all day moving her into the dorm. At the rates they charge, it is more costly to sleep in the dorm than go to class. Maybe they should try sleeping in class?

I thought all college kids slept in class anyway.

Probably wouldn't hurt anything in the short term, but I doubt it has the detergents needed for combustion engines. As long as he drains it out ASAP and replaces it with engine oil he'll be fine even if he did run gear oil in it.
