replacing the shuttle valve assembly in the ABS modulator assembly
 

While the local dealer had my car they performed the usual complete inspection and suggestion list for everything I should pay them to fix on my car. They confirmed what the dealer in Atlanta did 6 months ago when I had my ABS codes read for the 3 amigos, namely that my shuttle valve assembly in the ABS module needs replacing. They estimate around $1200 for parts and labor and the part itself can be had from Atlantic British for $730 if I want to attempt it myself.

Has anyone else tried this repair on their Disco II? I don't recall a Sticky for this one and while I am good at general repairs I get a little worried as to what labor is involved or if I might screw up the $730 part while attempting the repair. I have seen on somebody's blog that Land Rover employs some kind of fancy computerized gadget to power-bleed the ABS unit after it is put back together.

Any thoughts or suggestions.

Ps: My 3 amigos come and go sporadically and I have no squealing or excess dust on my hubs. I notice when the lights are on the break pedal seems like it is a little spongy. As mentioned both dealer diagnostic tests indicated the shuttle valve kit is the issue for what it is worth.

Look at the sticky section Josh set up, there are some direction on how to rebuild, not replace the module for $100 or less.

Thanks Mike but I only saw a sticky on bleeding brakes. I do know that the LandRoverclubVI has a writeup on it. I also recall you suggesting that the $65 part from British Atlantic seldom fixes the issue for very long and to go with the $730 part.

Mike or others, I must be blind or have a mental deficiency because I don't see it! Where is the link for replacing a shuttle valve kit/assembly and will the $65 part do the job or not? Seems like if the failure of the ABS is so common there should be more posts about repair options.

I guess I could just do the small repair first and spring for the diagnostic tool/reset device we have read about here for $195 and if I solve my 3 Amigo issue I am ahead. And if I need the $730 part I am not too far behind!

I am 90% sure you have the shuttle valve electrical failure. Can the dealer actually give the codes they picked up? This is usually not the case of the actual switch going bad but the electric circuit board connecting them having a bad soldering job. I performed the hummer's write up on fixing it on MY pump and I am creating a Land Rover specific write up for us. Look for it in the next two days.

The Land Rover unit is identical to the hummer one........does not take long to do and its a pretty easy fix.

"if" it does not fix it, then you "could" get one here from the UK, it carries a 24month warranty which is more than you would get on a new one from the dealer.

You can get a good used one for under a 100 bucks. They usually give 30 day warrantys on these i believe.

Don't bother, they all have, or will have the same problem at some point. Open the sucker up, try to re-solder the pins, if that fails, hardware the switch connection. Problem solved. The link provided above is KEY to fixing this issue.
