replacing water pump: Do I need thread sealant on the bolts that enter water jacket?
My old water pump is off and hours later,...got all the gasket off the block. When putting it back together, do I need to use thread sealant on the long bolt(s) that go into the water jacket? Also, I watched Atlantic British's video on this, (they don't say anything about thread sealant and neither does the Rave),...and they suggest using a spray gasket tack on the block side of the gasket. The Rave doesn't say anything about either the thread sealant or gasket sealant.
Thinking I should just go back with the gasket dry. Don't know on the thread sealant. Those of you who have done this,....did you go back dry with bolts and gaskets? if so,...were you leak free afterwards? Brian in San Antonio |
Use a thread sealant, I just use black rtv, but it wouldn't hurt to purchase actual thread sealant. I also use a light coating (very thin) of black rtv on the gasket surface. Im old school, so I have a hard time not using any permatex on items. Everybody's different in this procedure.

Teflon tape on the long bolts, gasket tack or sealant is based on your preference. |
+1
Sealant on bolts and rtv on both gasket sides. |
ARP thread sealant on the bolts. Paper gasket smeared with right stuff on either side. Nothing comes close.

I did the sealant on the bolts and the high tack on the gasket

Spray-on high tack red works great. Do both sides of the water pump gasket. I also use it for the front cover gasket, both sides. |
