Service Engine Light

I have a 1998 Land Rover Discovery that has 84, 600 miles. At 82, 500 miles my "Service Engine Light" came on. I took the truck to a service station and they plugged it up to do a computer diagnosis. They did not get a code to come up. They told me there were no problems with the vehicle. I then talked to a local Land Rover dealer and they told me the light comes on automatically at 82, 500 to check emissions. I recently had the car inspected for the state inspection where they checked the emissions and it passed. Does anyone know how to turn off the light so I don't have to be charged $80+ from the dealer to turn off the light?

I think on a 98 there is a switch, that looks like a relay, it will be either behind the passenger kick panle or under the passenger seat. If you see a small relay size box with a Rover emblym on it you have found it. Next step is to take a paper clip bend the wire straight and stick it in the small hole on the emblym.
Good luck,
Mike

According to the Factory manual the unit is located in the passenger footwell. Remove unit from plug. Remove tamperproof label to gain access to hole for resetting. Place a thin metallic probe into access hole and momentarily electrically short between reset pins inside unit. Good luck.

Disco 2 Probs

Hi Guys n Gals. I have had my 2002 Disco for about a year now with no real problems apart from the intermittent illumination of the ABS, TC and one other light I can't recall. Nothing seems to be affected, but these lights and the ding dong sound it makes are getting a little annoying. Anybody got any ideas?
Also today I changed the spark plugs at 60,000 miles and changed from Champion to Bosch Platinum 2. After changing them I took the Disco for a spin. To my annoyance I believe it is running on 7 and not 8 cylinders. I checked all the caps and leads and everything seems to be fine. To add even more frustration, the engine service light is now illuminated. This light has never come on before.
Could it be a bad plug? How do I get rid of that engine service light?
Thanks in advance. Jack.

jacksyachts,

The CEL will illuminate when the computer logs "multiple mis-fires" on one or more cylinders. When you changed the plugs, you might have damaged one of the wires internally at the boot --- when you pulled it off. We usually change out a wire set at about 60K miles in our Northern California climate. One basic thing you could do is start up the vehicle with the hood open and in a dark environment (Like at night -with the headlights off). Look for any visual sign of arcing, which sometimes also gives an audible "Snapping" sound as the bad wire is discharging to ground (like the exhaust manifold).

Some of the big auto parts chains, like Autozone, Pep Boys, etc. ---have a scanner that they can hook up and clear your CEL. If you can't find one of them you have to find a repair shop that can.

Now with all of that said, I almost forgot one other thing. You wouldn't be the first one to install new plugs and actually crack the insulator portion by delivering the tightening torque where the socket was cocked on the plug. If you didn't hear anything when tightening them doesn't mean you didn't possibly damage one of them. The advantage the shops have is that they can read the code and pinpoint what cylinder is misfiring and pull that plug first.

Geoman
