Just got a '00 Black D2. Cali car, 3 owners, pretty much clean, towed it back with my D1, which started overheating when I was towing another car last week. So I took off the hood to make it home and it stopped overheating ever since, but that's another story (see pics :P) Got the D2 pretty cheap because it probably needs a transmission (according to the prev. owner). Here are some pics of it...


The Trans. problem: The prev. owner said "he was driving on the highway and heard a big bang and pulled over right away, then got towed all the way back home". He seemed like he didn't have anything to hide, so his info seemed reasonable.
Anyways, I haven't gotten a chance to take a look at it completely, but this is what I know so far:
Front driveshaft is hanging and isn't connected to the transfer case (figured probably just a U-joint)
PARK does not work, neither does Drive.
E-brake does work. Weird cause I thought it locks it through the transfer case, unlike most cars, which lock at the brakes, so that must mean at least the Rear Driveshaft is connected, correct?

So, if the Rear Driveshaft is connected that means, it should move in DRIVE, right?? Unless of course the Trans. is bad .....Or would something else not let it move? ..I'm not familiar with LR's, but I'm learning! :)

Hmm..bang, loss of transmission functions, front propshaft not connected to transfer case...sounds like the PO failed to change his u-joints to grease-able ones. I am willing to bet a small amount of money you are going to need a transmission, because I bet that one has a hole in the side of it now.

Transmissions can be readily had through various suppliers, and I would STRONGLY suggest rebuilding that propshaft immediately with grease-able u-joints!!

On your place I would do this.Since this is 2000 D2 there is a chance that you have cdl.Remove front drive shaft completely.Then go under the truck and if it have cdl try to lock it .Than if truck moves ,your only damage is going to be front drive shaft.

Just wondering if taking out the back window on the DI also helped keep the engine temp down.......Front driveshaft can be removed, you will want a couple of 9/16th wrenches. YOu might also spray the nuts with PB Blaster to help get them off easier. If you are in So Cal, let me know, there are a number of DII trannys around for reasonable prices. Phil

I would bet anything that if you travel back to where the big bang on the freeway happened you will find a piece of the transmission with a puddle of dex III. If the transmission will not go into gear it is because when that drive shaft came off at 70 it rebounded back off the road and ripped the side of your transmission off causing it to spew all the fluid out. Transmission will not work without fluid. E-brake has nothing to do with transmission. I have first hand experience just put a new tranny in my 2000 two days ago for the same reason. Good luck and if you are a beer drinker make sure you stay stocked.

Do you work at a junkyard or just have a big car collection? I think you are on the verge of learning a whole lot about the Discovery II idiosynchracies.

I already found a trans. for it, may have to take my hoodless rover to go get it.

What are some Front Propshaft/driveshaft options do I have?
I've checked out some, but the prices are absurd and I dont want to get a used one cause I will most likely be using this vehicle as my own for quite a bit and common sense tells me to not buy a used one lol.
Are there any company's out there that make better/upgraded propshafts in the US for the same price as the oem?

lol I do have a few cars. All the one's in the pic are not all mine though. I buy, sell, modify Bmw's and the rest of the cars there are my roommate's and some customer's. I counted 15 as we were rearranging them today. I personally only drive 2.

Ventilation hole... I'm going have to look into that upgrade! ;) For propshaft options, if this is going to be a daily driver type vehicle, I would get a used one, and have the U-joints and centering ball replaced by a driveline shop (being sure to use grease-able U-joints) or rebuild it yourself. If this is going to be a trail rig, you can look into the Tom Woods propshaft.
