Slight Pinging after spark plug change
Morning All, I have a 1999 Discovery I with about 93K miles. Saturday morning I took advantage of our amazing San Diego weather and did and oil/filter change (Mobil 1) and transmission drain and refill. I also swapped out the spark plugs with Bosch Platimun +4. The car purrs at idle and runs great (it ran well before the change).
Problem - I hear slight pinging on acceleration. I am running premium gas. Never heard the pinging before. Any ideas? Phil 1999 Discovery I 93,000 miles |
RE: Slight Pinging after spark plug change
I would have to say that it is normal, your truck is running so well that it does not know what to do other than make noise.
As the plugs get dirty it will stop. |
RE: Slight Pinging after spark plug change
Thanks Spike, I will keep you posted. I hope that it will help with the gas mileage. I have only taken it on the road one time. I got upwards of 20 mpg. Blew my socks off (compared to my Land Cruiser at 16 mpg). In town, however, it was getting increasingly bad mileage (still ran well) in the 11-12 mpg range. Thank goodness we are only at $1.95 a gallon these days. Thanks again. Phil

Did you change out your plug wires also? What kind of wires are you using? If you're not using Magnecor 8mm wires, I recommend you consider switching to them. I just put Platinum +4s in my 97 and very impressed with them so far. Can't wait for my drive to Phoenix the end of the month to see what kind of mileage I'm getting with the new plugs and wires.

RE: Slight Pinging after spark plug change
Phil-Some pinging is a good thing, it means that all of the gas is actually being used, which is good.
Enjoy your truck running well-Phil |
