Small coolant leak--is Blue Devil going to fix it?
 

I have a small head gasket leak on my 2000 Disco with 64K. I DO NOT want to dump in the money needed to bring it to the stealer and don't like the idea of paying $1500 + to go to the "local shop".
I heard that Blue Devil is supposed to be pretty good stuff, but to use the Blue Devil you must:
1. Drain the radiator (I can do that, I have the rave manual).
2. Refill with water and a flushing agent. (it recommends driving with the water only for like 3 hours.
3. Drain again and refill with water. After filling the system with water only--top it off with the Blue Devil.
3. You run the engine at idle with the blue devil in for 50 minutes.
4. Drain the water completely and then refill with normal fluid. Bleed, etc.

So here are my questions.
First and foremost--has anyone used Blue Devil--if so what do you think?
1. Knowing how heat sensitive these aluminum blocks are, can you run a disco for 3 hours with only water to flush the system?
2. Is doing all of this going to hurt my thermostat?
3. Minimally I would like to flush my coolant for new even if y'all don't reccomend the Blue Devil--Should I stick with Dexcool or find a better alternative?

I wouldn't recommend trying to do the quick fix method as it could create other problems. If you are planning on keeping your truck for awhile you should bite the bullet and start saving. This is a common problem with discos and once it is fixed you shouldn't have to worry about it again. When mine was leaking it turned out to be the valley pan gasket but with all the posts on here I just assumed the worst. How do you know that it is the head gasket? I wish that we had a poll with coolant leaks to see if it is the head gaskets or valley pan. I would just keep monitoring the coolant and plan on repairing it.

I know that the universal product folks warranty their products. I have used the White Shepherd in my transfer box in my DI and it has worked like a charm for the past couple of years. I just today put in some rear main seal stuff, by Univeral Products, in my DII. We will see how it works. What do you have to lose? If you need a head gaskets redo, if it works, you hit the lottery, if not, you are only out $50 for the stop leak and the dexcool, plus a few hours of time. Worth a shot. Dump the dexcool though after the flush.

RE-READ the directions. It MUST be in a FREE FLOWING SYSTEM... so..

NO thermostat can be installed while yo use it. SO....

You will need to go to your local plumbing hardware store and get a "T" or "Y" pipe connection to put in place of the thermostat. like this

Or if you have an old thermostat laying around just drill it out.

Excellent posts, I'm having the same issue very small leak. Can you put White Sheppard in the radiator reservior? Malmberg? valley pan gasket...what did that put you back? Thanks guy's - RR.

Do an Google, do a search and read up on their features.

So what am I really looking to spend to fix the leak? Avg. charge for head gasket & labor?
