Default So how much should I pay for a head gasket job?

Not knowing if I even need the job done yet (most Disco's need it between 60K-100K) and having 134K on the clock Im thinking about the prospect of it. So far the truck is behaving, no codes no overheating and my average driving temps are between 199-206 and last time I check my idle temp was 217. There is a minor burnt oil odor when you exit the cabin after a long drive but no noticeable loss of oil or coolant. Still using original thermostat but the water pump and belts were replaced by previous owner within last 10k. Occasional engine tick as is to be expected. With that said how much should I expect to pay for a complete head gasket job? Using the recommend studs and gaskets of course. Obviously I need to get the 180 thermostat installed and I would like to update all the cooling system hoses very soon, but should I do them now or wait until after the HG job? I can do the hoses and thermostat myself so Ill save some $$$ there. Is a HG job on a D2 to complicated for the average local mechanic? If so I can always have DAP Enterprise do the job, but they charge a couple grand I think plus its over the border.

Thanks

$1700-$2000 using studs, you can save $1200-1400 by spending a weekend yourself

First I would go ahead and do the hose and thermostat change. your temps are on the tad high side. Not bad but with the new 180 thermo you will run 7-10 degrees cooler. THat will help stave off the headgasket job? unless its just pulls a land rover thing and blows on you. AS for the price. I am in philly, there are a few good mechanics, 2 to be exact. I only work with 1. the average price is 1200-1600. that is everything. I can save a little by buying the pieces parts myself. This also insures I get what I want to use as opposed to what he would buy that puts a few extra bucks in his pockets. Hope that helps. Or you could just spend a few days and do it yourself for about 350-400.

IMHO I would change the thermostat and hoses now. If you are not losing coolant (from the back of the engine especially) This could "help" prevent the need for a HG job Sounds like you probably don't need a head gasket job yet. Oil could be valve covers or something like that.
I did my own head gasket job but I had it priced in Nashville for 1500.00 +- at Lances. He drives Disco's so I believe he knows what he is doing. If you start using extras like ARP head bolts etc it will cost more. Lots of discussion on arp bolt on here btw. I have heard 2k or more on here. I would suggest finding an Indy shop that know Land Rovers . Most know what they are up against. Research any shops to make sure they are good.
My 2 cents

Land Rover - Cityside Garage

They are not that far from NH and do great work. A bit under 2k it cost me, they did plugs/wires at same time so I can't recall exactly.

Alan Elliot of Cityside garage is an absolute stand-up guy. I would trust him with my Rover more than most anyone else. But a HG job will cost you.
