Sound behind instrument cluster??

Have an odd sound coming from behind the dash just left of the instrument cluster.

The sound resembles a faint fuel pump or vacuum pump sound.

Once the key is turned to position 2 on the ignition switch you can hear it. That being said, it must be electrical but not sure what component would cause this sound.

There is a cooling fan in the dash, look for a small vent, its like a computer cooling fan.

I noticed the same at the same location.
Can anyone please expand about the location / identification of such fan in the service manual / electrical schematic ?

It's the interior air temp sensor and it's part of the climate control, it has a little fan that pulls air past a temp sensor and feeds that information to the automatic temp control. It's located behind a little grille on the left side of the knee pad next to the dimmer control. Mine was noisy and I took it out and cleaned all the gunk out of the fan (just like my computer cooling fan). Here's a link with pictures of when I cleaned it. https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...-sensor-50556/
The instructions on how to remove it is in RAVE

Thank you everyone!!! Pulled the fan out and blew out the crud with a can of air. Works great now. Took about 5 minutes to do the job.

Mine makes a little tick, tick, tick sound.
I removed mine and cleaned it with MAF cleaner, put it back in, and it makes the same noise. Guess I need to find a new/old one. The dealer wanted like $80 or something outrageous

Take it to Radio Shack and have them match it up with a new one.

It's more than just a fan, it also has a temp sensor built into it. I doubt that Radio Shack will match that. It's not a cooling fan, the fan draws air past the sensor for the automatic temperature control (something DI's don't have). If you don't want the irritating noise, just unplug the sensor, the fan will quit turning and you won't have automatic temp control. Not entirely sure how that will affect the operation since I've never tried this.

So you cant replace just the fan?
Thats what I was trying to say, I have never seen the unit on the DII, our Volvo had auto HVAC but there was no fan to pull in air.

It's a very tiny motor denso motor. i'm sure you can get one used for a few bucks.
