Spare tire carrier mod for larger tires
FYI...This is more for the newbies like me ;)
Early last month I bought larger tires from my 2004 Discovery...went from my wimpie stock 255/55/18's (29 inch tire)to 285/60's (31.5 inch tire). I added a 285/60 spare....it fit on the rear door and rubbed some on the rear bumper when I shut it, but still worked....but still wanted to raise the tire up some...I didn't think spending $99 for a rovertym bracket was worth it to raise the spare. I read on here somewhere I guy mentioned you can flip the carrier upside down and this will raise the spare about 2 inches. So, I tried this last night...took a little more time to remove the interior rear door subs and un-snap the vinyl cover to reach the 6 nuts to the spare carrier....when you flip the carrier, you will only be able to re-use the top and bottom holes for the bolts, don't use the middle bolts anymore. You will have to "notch" out a 1 inch x 1 inch area for the rear wiper arm to fit through...that was easily done with my air tool. Walla! It works perfect....cost of project $0! |

Can you post some pics of the finished product? That would be helpful to others, as I plan on putting similar sized tires as well.
Thanks, |

You could also buy a safari rack and put the spare on there. Then use the tire carrier for the jerry can holder so you can keep the thirsty motor happy LOL. But this may cost about $1000!
