Starting Problem
I have a 2002 Disco II with 113,000 mile on it. A few days ago I went to start it and it was a little tough to start but once it was started ran fine.... the next time I tried to start it turned over fine but was acting like it was out of gas... I opened the hood and the Idle air control valve was making a crazy noise... I replace the IACV hoping that would take care of the problem. Still no start... like it was out of gas. The next morning it started right up... ran perfect for the next 30 min and I shut it off and wouldn't start back up. A few hours later I tried again and it started fine and ran perfectly.
The problem seems to be that there is not enough fuel to start... once it is started it runs fine and idles well. Any idea on what the problem may be? Thanks for your help in advance |
First, stop guessing, all you are doing is wasting money.
Send me your number and I will walk you thru what to check first. |

The simplest initial check is to turn the key to run and listen for the fuel pump, before actually turning the key to start.
They are known to fail intermittently. i.e., after sitting they will run one time, then not another. Between times when it didn't start and then did, what did you do? Just walk away for a while? |
I am quite sure it is not the fuel pump.... Here is why... it may send me to Land Rover purgatory but.....
I can get it to start nearly 100% of the time if I spray a little starting fluid in the air intake.... It will start up and run fine... I will idle fine but if I turn it off it will rarely start up again without another shot of starting fluid... It is most likely to start up without help in the morning cold.... I don't know what to do and really don't want to damage my vehicle. This is my main vehicle and am a single father so I need it to run. Thanks again in advance for any help... Jason |
any chance this is a CPS gone bad?
|
There are a number of posts on that angle, and it sometimes happens when engine is warmed up.
|
What was the outcome on this one?

I'm not that familiar with DII's, but if it reliably starts with starting fluid, it sounds like a fuel problem to me, most likely the pump has low pressure.
