Steering and Alignment Woes
 

I started a thread not too long ago about my steering wheel being off center (have to hold it to the left) and truck pulling to the right. I took it in for an alignment and the alignment shop told me "it's fine all within spec".

Today, on my way to work my steering wheel was straight again and the truck tracked straight down the road. What would cause this? The only item I have not replaced on the front end is the upper and lower ball joints. All steering and suspension components are new (incldng, tires, panhard rod, castor correcting arms, steering stabilizer, steering rods and all 4 rod ends...)

I ordered a set of upper and lowers from Rovers North waiting to be installed. Not sure if this is my problem or not. Thoughts?

I would be real careful if the steering is re-centering itself, something real bad may happen if you don't find and fix it. Might check out the steering shaft make sure the knuckles are tight.

Yeah, its really odd. I've been all over this thing, all checks out okay. Am stumped. Plan is install ball joins and go from there.

Anyone ever hear of ball joints casuing these issues? I keep being up ball joints, because I think I had a late model Caddy which experienced similar issues. The steering would pop on turns and the steering wheel would be of center. Hit the opposite corner, pop, steering would be centered again.

What are symptoms of a bad or failing cv joint or hub assembly?

Ball joints will start popping on you during turns and the CV joints will click when turning in one direction but be ok in a straight line, till the fail.

My fix for the sloppy steering was only corrected with a new steering box. All other components tite. Turns out a tooth was cracked off the "rack"!
