Steering wheel shake at 45MPH
Guys I've got some strange things going on at 45MPH and only that speed lol +/- 2-3MPH
I don't get vibration at all highway speeds or low speeds. My vehicle also doesn't pull noticeably while cruising either. I think my alignment is halfway decent, but I have no idea what is causing the hippy hippy shakes on the steering wheel. Sometimes is super rough when not under engine power. Much less noticeable when under power. I don't know much about suspension, so any help would be appreciated :) |
Check the tire pressure! I had the same issue and after replacing a bunch of front end parts (which probably need it anyhow) I found that when they mounted my new tires, the put 45 PSI of air in them. Dropped it down to 35 and the vibration went away.
Might not be the problem but a quick and easy check. |
Also, before 30 comments build up and you come back and say something like, "yeah I did change the wheels before this started"...
has anything been replaced/changed prior to this? |

has anything been replaced/changed prior to this? I recently just added in some sway bar disconnects, but that shouldn't have any impact to straight line driving performance right? Apart from that, I haven't touched the suspension in months (only fluid changes) |
Did the phenom start after the disconnects? Could be something there if so.
Also, maybe you lost some wheel weights? I would have all 4 wheels balanced and an alignment then go from there. |

Check the condition/movement of the Tie Rods. Check for play in the Upper and Lower Ball Joints. Also check for play in the Panhard Rod Bushings. The pic is for ref. you don't have to remove the panhard rod to check for a worn set of bushings. |
I had the same issue. Rotate and balance. Especially if you run an aggressive cheap Mastercraft tire like I do....
|
I run mud claws lol so I can imagine that's it :(

Are your sway bar disconnects adjustable? Do you have a lift? What length did you set the sway bar disconnects to? I ask this because I am having the same issue after new larger tires and adding 1" spacers to my 2" spring lift and wondering if the length of my adjustable disconnects could be the issue in addition to the new tires.
Question: Should the disconnects be set longer than stock length to accommodate the lift? How do you know what length to set them at? |
