steering wheel shakes after replaceing parts
 

I have replaced the 2 steering rods and the damper but still get a fast shaking steering wheel once in a while while driving. I had the a alignment too. Any suggestions on what else is going?

Could be a wheel bearing assembly going bad or it could be as simple as a tire out of balance, although I would assume that the wheels would have been balanced when you had it aligned.

How new are your tires? You could have a tire with some belt separation too...

The tires are fairly new and have been balanced recently. How do I check to see if the wheel bearing is bad or going?

Jack it up, or put it on a lift. Grab the top and bottom of the tire and try to rock it in and out (pulling on the back of the tire at the bottom while pushing on the front of the tire at the top and the reverse). See if there is movement.

You can also check the tie-rod ends on the Track Rod and Drag Link by doing the same thing only using 3 & 9 o'clock on the tires as your pulling and pushing points. If there is movement in that direction, but not in the 12 & 6 o'clock directions, then it is limited to the steering parts.

If there is movement in both directions, chances are it's the wheel bearing assemblies (which are in an enclosed hub and the whole hub has to be replaced. They are about $400 each...

Yeah, there expensive for sure. The tie rods are all new. So I should rule out the steering rack?

It could be the rack, but I'd eliminate the wheel bearings first. I think the rack is less likely to fail than the wheel bearings, but I suppose it could be the culprit.

Mt tires are so bad it changes directions left and right at low speed and just had a shake over 70kms belts are gone.

Check the backlash on the steering box which is adjustable. If there is any slack undo the locknut on the top of the steering box and screw the screw in then back it off one eighth of a turn then re-tighten the locknut without moving the screw position (best done with a spanner).

Well, i dont get any wiggle room when i grabbed the tires from the top and bottom but i get a tiny bit from side to side. The pass front makes a metal tap sound when wiggling it. The bottom ball joint on that wheel looks hashed but cant tell if thats where the sound is coming from.

I recently replaced the ball joints (upper and lower) on my disco... What a PITA!
