Stripped starter bolt
1 Attachment(s)
Attempting to remove my starter, i stripped the lower mounting bolt. It is so tight, i had a 1/2" drive ratchet with pipe extension on the handle. Didnt loosen, just stripped.
Now, do I try an extractor, like one pictured, or I thought about welding the hex bit right into the head of the bolt. The only thing with the extractor, is how tight the bolt is. If it breaks in the bolt, i will be out of option b of welding the bit to the bolt. ??? thoughts ??? |
I hammered a Torx bit into mine and it came out. If the bolt head snaps off, you would still be able to get the starter off and if needed do the weld on a piece trick, or grab it with a different style extractor.

You are probably using a 12 point socket.
That will spin. You need a 6 point. There is no way you will spin a 6 point socket on that bolt. Go to Sears and get one. |

Think I will try that before welding a bit into it |
One problem with these bolts is the open end is toward the front of thr truck, and they can get filled with gunk, whcih won't let allen socket get all the way to the bottom, a blast of break cleaner with a straw will flush it out.

Ouch.
Maybe you can try an English size which is just slightly bigger and hammer that in as Savannah suggests... Get a tooth pick or a Qtip - break off the fuzzy part of the Qtip and use the stick and get all the gunk out. Or spray it hard with carb cleaner with a spray tube right smack in front of it to clean out all the grease and junk. |

Here's what the salvaged bolt looks like after Torx. Replaced wih 3/8 X 16 thread hex head bolts (9/16 wrench). |
OK, finally got it out. I initialy tried a T50 torx hammered into the bolt head, that stripped it out even more.
So I took a 13mm, 12pt deepwell socket, and hammered that m.f.'r over the head of the bolt. Took a 1/2" drive wratchet with a 12" pipe over the handle to break it free. |
Man oh man.
That was in there. I bet the last person who replaced the starter had an air impact wrench handy. they did not want that bolt out. Or, maybe there was locktite and the impact wrench. Glad you got it out. What an total nightmare. |
