stuck in gear

stuck in gear
I'm driving a 99 Disco Series II TD5 and I'm having trouble between 0-30mph. Normally at around 15mph (2,000rpm) the automatic transmission would go up a gear and then again at around 30mph (2,500rpm). In the last few days it has been sticking in gear and over revving. At 30mph I now reach 2,750rpm and (reluctantly) the transmission kicks in. A lot of over revving and I'm also hearing a high pitched whine. After 30mph and on up to 70mph - no problem at all....anyone have any ideas? Am I looking at a majorly expensive repair?

RE: stuck in gear
Hmm, its the most obvious question---is your transmission fluid to an adequate level? Make sure it is not low, or 'baked.' If it is baked it prolly overheated/ing in which case you dont want to drive it much as damage will result. Be ware, the transmission overheat light sometimes burns out, so it wouldnt warn you. Other than that, I do not know much about the D2 transmissions vs. my D1. You might want to look for a reputable foreign transmission shops too, I take things to professionals when I have no idea what is going on...hope you fix it, its never good to see a Rover in trouble...

RE: stuck in gear
Hi, thanks for your reply. I had to drive the car today and it was worse than ever so I took your advice and went straight to the nearest 4x4 dealership. They couldn't look at it there and then but said I shouldn't drive it at all. So, a taxi home and it's booked in for repair Monday. Thanks again for your help, I'll let you know if your diagnosis was correct when they phone me with the bad news!!
