Supposed To Light Up??? - Gear Selector
 

I have an automatic 97 Land Rover Discovery and was wondering if the patch to the left of the selector is supposed to light up. Im talking about the strip that has R, N, D, 3, 2, 1, etc. It a pain not being able to see what I shifted into sometimes even though I got used to counting the clicks. The strip looks translucent and it just hit me that it may possible light up. I have had interior light problems before so it would not suprise me.

yep, both sides light up

Both of mine go on and off, if you hit the left side it goes off, hit it again, comes back on. The right side is intermitten, some weeks it is on, some it isnt.. Really weird :D

Would you guys have any idea how to fix this? If I have to rip the center console out to do it I think I will ignore it for now, hopefully it is just a fuse. Dont know if its related somehow but my parking break is locked up to.

There is a ring around the outside of that shifter, it pops off from the back. After that, you wil see two small bulb sockets underneath. Chances are that your bulbs are burnt out. I know when I bought my 1997 that the bulbs were burnt and this is how I got mine running.
