Get a Volvo XC AWD. Or if you have time for wrenching, get an older D2 with a blown HG and fix it. I bought mine that way for $1,000 and put about $800 into it (including front drive shaft) and have been driving it now for 2 1/2 years trouble free. (knocking on wood )

My second car was a 95 2dr Yukon. Bought with 130k and drove to 290k. Only issue was a radiator replacement at 250k That truck was great!

Subaru. 4WD, reliable and older ones can be easily had for 2-4K.

Lots of good advice here...just wait! I had to wait 14 years before I bought my Rover before it made sense, and I also work on my own vehicles. I would HIGHLY recommend a Jeep Cherokee (99-01). Cheap, solid inline-6, easy to work on, more reliable, 4WD, better EPA, offered in a manual tranny, etc...

Stuff to think about...

1. In the statistics-pulled-out-the-**** department, it seems like 80% of the tahoes/yukons on CL have had the tranny replaced. Might want to get one where that is already done.

2. A Volvo or Honda will need the timing belt done at 80k-ish intervals.

3. An ok condition D1 can be had for $2k or less and is not horrible on maintenance once the HGs are out of the way.
