Based on your list for other 4x4's and you being a student on a budget, I'd shoot for a '90s Tahoe/Full-size Blazer. The 350's are solid motors, parts are dirt cheap, and they're easy to work on. I had a 1994 full-size blazer and it never failed me even with 230k on it.

Lots of good advice here...just wait! I had to wait 14 years before I bought my Rover before it made sense, and I also work on my own vehicles. I would HIGHLY recommend a Jeep Cherokee (99-01). Cheap, solid inline-6, easy to work on, more reliable, 4WD, better EPA, offered in a manual tranny, etc...

Stuff to think about...
1. In the statistics-pulled-out-the-**** department, it seems like 80% of the tahoes/yukons on CL have had the tranny replaced. Might want to get one where that is already done.
2. A Volvo or Honda will need the timing belt done at 80k-ish intervals.
3. An ok condition D1 can be had for $2k or less and is not horrible on maintenance once the HGs are out of the way.
