Throttle Stuck/Acceleration problems while driving
I have a 2004 Land Rover Discovery II SE w/ 110,000 miles. I was driving it on the highway up a hill the other day and noticed the pedal felt a little weird, almost like it was not accelerating properly. I stepped on the gas all the way and all of a sudden the engine throttle got stuck in the full position, the engine was screaming even though I did not have my foot on the gas, it was also still accelerating up the hill. I put the car in neutral with the engine still screaming and was able to get it off the road to turn the car off. I let the car sit for a couple minutes and then tried to turn it back on but it was still stuck on full throttle. I was able to get it towed home.
After a little bit of research, I figured it might be the Throttle Position Sensor. Upon replacing that with the Bosch replacement part I was able to start it fine. I went for a test drive and all seemed ok at first. But then I went on an open road and stepped on the gas all the way and the same thing happened?? Was able to get it back into neutral and unstuck out of full and get it home without any problems. It only seems to happen when I press the gas pedal all the way to the floor. PLEASE HELP?:confused::mad::confused::confused: |
Problem with the kickdown cable getting stuck?
|
take off all of the cables from the throttle on the plenum.
Examine the throttle cable. Try to move the cable with your fingers from the throttle end. If the cable is sticking - then that is a problem. Now try to rotate the throttle keeper with the cables off? Goes smooth? Spring returning it to closed? Remove the rubber fitting and look inside for debris. put the throttle cable back on the throttle. Leave off the cruise control cable. Try it out on the road again. |
Solved
I ended up buying penetrating lubricant and soaking it while a friend stepped off and on the gas. I could see it getting stuck. After soaking it like crazy it started to not stick anymore. Took for a test drive and I think it's working now :) no longer sticking. Just needed some good old

I have a 2003 TD5 and the throttle is 'fly by wire' remote. Is the V8 still old cable technology?
|
if the cable stuck once, it will stick again even with lube.
cant even tell you how much time i have spent in the last 50-years freeing up cables of all types E-brake , clutch cables only to have them freeze again. All it takes is one broken or freaded wire strand to have it stick |
I would definatly get that fixed... or delete these posts, awesome find for a good personal injury lawyer in the near future for whoever you rear end ;)
Joking aside, have the cables replaced and mechanisms gone over by a certified mechanic, keep the paperwork and liability is off your shoulders and you can sleep tight. not to mention what kind of damage might be done to the motor randomly slamming the limiters every so often in neutral, somethigns bound to break, this is a land rover after all! |
There appears, looking at the internet, a whole bunch of reasons for the V8 throttles sticking open and some are not related to a fault in the throttle system or cable. It also happens on the TD5 with manual stick gearchange and relates to the clutch sensor switch.
In other words it seems a more complex problem and one which isn't too pleasant which could cause a nasty accident and even a fatality. If it were me I would take the truck to an LR specialist rather than take a chance as at best it could easily 'lunch' the engine or at worst, potentially kill someone. |
replace cable
