Default Ticking...

Hello,

I have a 99 discovery series II with 110k miles. It has a rather noticiable ticking noise it appears to be coming from the bottom back of the engine. No noise up top and it runs fine. Any ideas?

Thank you

That was my 2003 Disco (sorry bout the leaking valve covers – I swear the engine is spotless now).

I believe the noise was being generated by a sticking rocker arm.

By suggestion of the good contributors to this site I performed an AFT engine flush and switched to Mobile 1 synthetic oil with a K&N oil filter. The ticking was eliminated immediately, and then recurred off and on ever the next 200 miles. I haven’t heard it since.

Hi trevorr,

Your descriptions sounds exactly like what my is doing right now. Mine is making a metallick ticking sound from underneigth the truck, not from the motor compartment. In fact it sounds like a rod knock!
I got under my truck, but couldn't really narrow it to anything specific.
Took it to a trusted mechanic today, he put it on the lift and determined it to be my left catalytic converer! Thank God!
My engine is new, so I was major paronoid!
Not sure yours is the same problem, but give them a check.
You can put a screwdriver on the cat and the handle end to your ear and listen for the loudest point.
BE CAREFUL! The cats will be HOT!
Good luck, let us know what you find.

Regards,
Nick

Nick,
Now you have to find out why your cat went bad before you replace it, so it won't kill your replacement.

I'm having my disco repaired today at the muffler shop as a result of a ticking. Mine is an exhaust leak. I would have sworn it was a rod knocking though! When the engine is cold, the soundis a sacry, deep knocking! As it warms up the sound becomes a lighter metalic tic tic ticing. The shop says the sound is from a bad gasket where the pipe joins to the manifold. I think its from the manifold gasket itself. we'll see Anyhow check it out.it may be not as bad as you think

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the tip, but one step ahead of you.
When I perchased my DII, had a blown head gasket, turned out to need more than head gaskets, try entire motor.
So thousands latter I have a great SUV, just a few little snags along the way.
The cats got plugged with the original engine spuing coolant in them.
Was hopeing they would be ok, guess not. Slowly working all the bugs out.
Wish I didn't like the truck so much cause it sure does require alot of TLC.

Regards,
Nick
