Do you even know how to service the tranny?
You'll need 6 quarts of Dex 3 a filter kit and 7 quarts of gear oil to do the 2 diffs and the t/case.

Read through the procedures in the service manual. This isn't something that can be half a$$ed. Differentials are pretty straight forward, but make sure you get the procedures for the transmission correct.

LOL a 1999 Discovery 1... lol am i the only one who caught that?!

Baylink 11-05-2009 03:31 PM

Well, Skater, I thought that too, originally, but apparently, MY99 was part D1 and part D2 -- though whether that was true in the NAS market, I'm not clear on.

NAS, I think all 99s *were* D2, but I wouldn't object to being proven wrong.

Hmm I always thought i had the last year discos! (1998) Mine was made on april 1998 so hmm it could be like dodges where they have different gens in different gens. ETC 3rd gen that is it in its 1st gen year... That probably didnt make sense.

hilltoppersx 11-05-2009 03:50 PM

there are both 99 D1's and D2's it was a transition year.

For the NAS (North American Specification) market the DII was introduced mid year 1999.
SO there are both 1999 DI's AND DII's.
Now are you ready to get confused?
The DII actually came out in 1998!!!
It was introduced to the rest of the world in 1998.
Soooo, that 1999 DI that you own is actually a 1998 model year just re-stickered to be a 1999.

GM did the same thing when they introduced the "new" Silverado back in the early 2000's.
They had overstock of the old style trucks so they re-stickered them as "new" and called them the "Classic Silverado".
A friend of mine bought one brand new because he could save $10k off the price of the same truck but only the new style but it had been sitting on a holding lot for over a year.

talk about foot in mouth disease! i guess you learn something everyday. jumper04, i was (and still am in many ways) a newbie working on my 99 disco 1. i did all of the fluid changes with my rave cd and help from this forum. everything went as planned and i'm learning more and more every time i choose to tackle the next project. just take your time.
