Finally got that little booger out, I bought a set of mini vice grips they worked great. It was completely clogged - literally a few pictures for those who are not sure why this is a good idea.

Crud that came out as I got the the plastic Spiral out

State if the spiral, the solid looking bit is the top

After cleaning

Nice work Richard. That is my next task, along with new ignition wires on my 00 D2. First time towing, I had to get a new converter box and 4-pin that attaches to the original box.

Great to know someone else in BC. I'm from Campbell River.

@JoJo The Giraffe There are a few of us up here, ACG currently heading for Tukin his 03. You should check out the Roverlanders of BC, they are a good bunch. I was over last year bouncing around the North end, Holberg Port Alice etc.

Just had a brutal time getting the oil separator out of my 02. It was pretty gunked up, broke off a couple of rings before I was able to yank it out (top nipple was gone when i removed the hose).

So, am I understanding this correctly that it basically decreases pressure in the engine, which should make the valve cover gaskets less....seepy? Is that the net-net of this mod?

Thanks for the helpful info!

@Bumble More or less the idea of the breather is to prevent over pressure the Rover design lends itself to clogging causing over pressure. This mod removes the separator and small air hole, with a large airway and common PCV restrictor that keps normal pressure. With the added bonus of the change of location making clogging highly unlikey
