Vibration at 73 mph?
 

I have a 2000 Land Rover Discovery II. Got it in May knowing that it had a head gaskets issue. Just got the head gaskets fixed and drove it to LA last weekend. Got about 16 mpg for 330 miles, including about 100 miles of city driving and freeway speeds of 65 to 80 mph. At $3.35 a gallon for premium, every mpg counts!

While on the freeway, I noticed a vibration while traveling around 73 to 75 mph. Generally below that speed all was good. The vibration didn't happen all of the time, but most of the time. It happened in concrete, asphalt, surface didn't seem to matter much. However, it was less pronounced on smoother asphalt. It has Dunlop tires on it, only about 10k miles on them. I had the tires rebalanced and rotated last night. Reduced pressure in the rears to 36 lbs. (from 46 lbs) and left the fronts at 28lbs. Took it out right after and still have the vibration, although it is somewhat less noticeable.

I also have a 2001 DII with Michelin LTXs on it, the ride is night and day, the 2001 run much smooth on the highway.

I did have the front driveshaft rebuilt and rebalanced a couple of months ago. Can't figure out what else it might be. Thoughts? (by the way, front and rear diffs are filled with Mobil Synthtic gear lube, tranny and transfer case are full). Thanks for looking. Phil

You could have a bent rim, take the wheels from one and put them on the other and see if the issue is still there. You could also check the rear shaft as well.

Does the vibration go away over that speed? It could be something as easy as one wheel slightly out of balance. I had a terrible vibration a long time ago at 65-70MPH, limped it home, checked the drive shafts for slop, and finding none, realised my left rear wheel had thrown a weight. I stuck it on the balancer to see how far off it was (1/4 oz), pulled the existing weight, rebalanced it, and it was smooth as silk afterward.

Well if you want to make every MPG count and make your vibration go away dont drive so fast.
You could have gotten almost 20mpg on your trip had you driven no faster than 65mph.

Not on the I-5 and I-405 between San Diego and LA, I would have been a hood ornament on the front of Kenworth. I was just keeping up with traffic. I did have the tires rebalanced and rotated last night. I may have to take off the front driveshaft and see if the driveshaft has a balance issue. Phil

Its not that I mind paying for the gas but some of the claims people make are ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! Yeah, I know he didn't claim that HE is getting that kind of mpg. Maybe, just maybe you can get near 20 mpg if you took out the seats, carpet, dash, doors, hood and you were going down hill with a tail wind with the truck in neutral. THAT might get you close.

I get 19 mpg when I roll down I-65 from Michigan to Alabama every year. I run the A/C full-bore, and usually have 3 passengers with me along with their lugguage. I drive with the cruise @ 72 mph.

The only thing I have to prove it are gas receipts, oh and the other people in the vehicle.

I'm a nerd and pulled up my excel spreadsheet on my Rover:
Pilot in Fremont, Indiana to the Pilot in Sonora, Ky:
Mileage: 347, Gallons used: 17.89. This gives me approx mpg of 19.43 in Mid-July of this year.
