Video of the dreaded tick I think
 

Here's my video of an 04 discovery 4.6 I'm trying to get confirmation on this "tick" sounds loud and horrible. The truck runs good no loss in power since the tick started. Thanks in advance.

Does it tick right on a cold start? Or does it only after it warms up? If the latter, it's a slipped sleeve.

Also, does it increase as you rev? If it does, a slipped sleeve.



99.9% sure it's the tick. It's giving me PTSD just to listen to.

It's not the end of it though, there ARE a few things that you can do.
A) Have it re-sleeved by a mechanic (~$3000)
B) Have the cylinders plug-welded or pinned by an indie mechanic (This is what I did, he charged about $1500 for the plug weld, and then a little extra for other stuff)
C) If you can do this third technique, power to you, it's cheap. Measure the temperature that the tick starts at. If it still starts at a higher temperature (~190ish), install an inline thermostat and some aftermarket fans and cool the SH1T out of that engine, so that the temperature stays below where it starts to tick.

The 03 d2 sitting dead in my shop with a dropped sleeve sounds exactly like that once warm :(

We're you monitoring temperatures? Did it over heat?

Sounds like someone is off-camera smacking a hammer on the bench.

Although it could be the mobile phone sound quality, sounds like there is some sai or exhaust noise near the start.

When you rev the engine does the tick (bang) go away in a certain rev range?

Take off the serp belt, run it for a short while, check it's not something ancillary.

I've never had a slipped sleeve, I so hope for you that's not what it is.


I've found consumer cameras distort loud noises quite a bit. I'm hoping this could be an exhaust leak maybe? At first that's what I thought, but as you backed away the sound didn't line up with it.

As another poster said, it's like someone clanking a hammer in the background.

As for Temps it came close to overheating. Under a decent load the tick goes away, also decelerating in gear with no throttle it goes away. As for camera distortion not really ****storm is loud

What temp do you call 'close' to overheating?

I suggest using a mechanics' stethescope to determine if the knocking sound is coming from the block. I had a similar sound during the summer. Used a stethescope to deduce the issue. Luckily, it turned out the block was not coming from the block itself. Changed the exhaust manifold gaskets and all is well.
