Viscous Fan Question

How much do you tighten the main bolt on the viscous fan? Should it be loose enough for the fan to spin freely when pushed by hand or should it be wrenched down a little harder?

Thanks!!

you tighten it down. the fan dosen't spin on the bolt, the clutch spins. you may be confused because, when the fan clutch is not spinning it is stiff. when it spins the fluid in it is pushed outward centrifically and it frees up till it gets hot and locks, engaging the fan. hope this helps

Yep, it sure does. Now I know why the clutch was hard to turn with my fingers when I had it off looking at it. Makes perfect sense!! So I tighten it down as hard as I can?

One other question. Before I installed my new belt, I removed the 70mm idler to inspect for wear and tear. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary so I put the idler pulley back on. Then it dawned on me to check the torque setting page to see if the idler had a setting. I did not see one so I just tightened it down with a 13mm until it was tight.

I then tried to spin it with my hand and noticed that it didn't spin very well. I loosened up the nut a bit and then it began to spin a lot easier. I wasn't sure how tight to go so I just tightened it back down firmly and after the belt and viscous were installed, I fired it up. I hear a distinct whining sound which I can link to the 70mm idler pulley. Did I tighten it too tight? Should I loosen the nut up a little?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Yes, loosen the idler pulley nut just a skosh.
