Washed the engine, Tach not working, battery light is on
 

Hello.

I sent my disco to a carwash and they washed the engine. I requested them to put a plastic bag in the alternatior and fuse box, but I really do not know if they did it that way. When I went to take the car, the tach was not working and the battery light is on. Could it be an easy fix or do I need to replace the whole Alternator?

Wait for it to dry out, but yeah, your alt got wet. If it doesn't come back, you are probably looking at a new one. Take it back to the wash....

If it was "professional" car wash shop, they should cover a new alt for you. Did you let them know there was a problem before you drove away? If not, you'll have trouble proving it was the wash that caused the issue.

I wash my entire engine, 99 D2, at least once a month and never covered anything. Granted, on a D1, because of the placement of the ECU, you must cover that but water in the alternator won't shut it down.
As all ready mentioned, just dry it out.

'98 Disco.
So my mechanic advised I get the undercarriage power washed. While I was at the place, I decided to go ahead and have them wash the engine as well. It started fine right after, I pulled it around, and then it wouldn't start. Eventually, it sounded like it was trying to turn over, but wouldn't. Finally, it would turn over then die. After about an hour, it turned over and ran long enough to get me home (though it died twice on the way). Also, there was a clicking sound coming from the fuses under the passenger seat...Ideas? The behavior is very alternator-esque, but I'm not sure. Will it go away when the engine truck dries out? Thanks.

Cranking and turning over are the same thing.
So it turns over but wont start.
Could be they got water into the ECU, it is on the passenger fender and they leak when the get old.
Let it dry out and see what happens.

With a Disco One, you are asking for trouble if you go wild with water under the hood, I washed mine once at a car wash, will never ever ever do that again.

X3 on this. ECU got wet. The clicking is the relays coming in and going out. Might also check your fuse blosk under the dash. If your sunroof drains are leaking or your windshield is, it will go right into it.

Basically, leave it in the sun for a bit and see if it dries out..
