What are all the downsides to lifting the Disco?
 

Hey all! Never have I ever...lifted any of my trucks. Thinking about getting a 1.5” or 2” lift though using one of the kits from Atlantic British to put a little beefier tire onboard. What are disadvantages to lifting? Gas mileage? Excessive component wear?

A 2 inch lift will have no effect on mpg really, the larger tire size will have a small impact on your speedometer/odometer which may make you think you are getting less mpg than in reality.

The biggest "disadvantage" I've had is sometimes the short girlfriend need a push up into the cab... And my 87 year old dad needs a stool to get in.

Living in the city I found it an inconvenience getting into ramps. The stiffer springs do handle better.

Obviously depends on the driving done with it. I have never lifted by rides because they handle worse lifted. Short wheelbase SUV's are not the most rollover resistant to start with, and lifting them does not help. When I lived in the Sierra Nevadas and saw a Blazer on its roof one day I decided it would better unlifted. Unless it is a dedicated off road truck you likely will never see the advantage off-road, Discos have plenty of wheel travel stock and don't really need lifting imho.

After hearing some clunking noise I decided to check things out tonight found one of my front shocks done

now should I just go with a 2 inch lift or
buy just the shocks ???

Also after reading here the springs often go bad as well

what y’all think I should do

You can use the same shocks with or without the 2" lift. So if you need shocks by all means get them... However you may want to asses the condition of your springs. Putting new shocks on old springs will wear out the shock faster. Killed a set of Bilsteins in 10k miles running the old sagged out springs. Ideally do both at the same time.

With a 2.5" lift and 255/70/18 tires, I find that driving in 3rd instead of drive on winding rural roads keeps me in the power band better. I use D on major highways. Kind like its my overdrive now.

The other issue with a 2 or 2.5 inch lift is parking garages under 6'7" are a no go.

And it already has the factory baja rack on top, making what's already an issue worse.

I've got the Baja rack on mine (and not the low profile). Had to find an SLS plip to be able to lower it to get into my 7' garage. Raising the header to 8' so I can get it in even after lifting + new tyres.
