Default What did I find in my Transmission filter?

Hey guys, here's a new one for y'all. I changed my transmission fluid and filter today and just happened to look into the bottom opening of the old filter. The picture attached shows what I found.

I haven't had any odd behavior from the transmission, shifts great and is quiet. The fluid that came out was pretty dark, but other than the chunks in the filter there was nothing more than a small amount of shavings on the magnet in the oil pan.

The pieces in the photo do belong together, they have the smooth shiny inner half and a cast look to the outside. I didn't tear into the filter to look for more pieces.

The old filter was stamped "10 05" so I assume that it was the 60k service filter.

The vehicle is a 2004 Discovery S

Any ideas?

Sorry to not help. But this thread would be some much better if you found that penny in the transmission, too. haha

It looks like chunks from the tranny case.
As for your having dark fluid I would suggest you do another drain and refill in order to get rid of as much of that fluid as you can.
By the way did you fill the tranny a second time with the engine running for a total of around 5 to 5.5 quarts?

I followed the sticky thread on how to change the transmission fluid and filter on this forum as well as the instructions from the RAVE. Truck sounds and acts pretty happy about it's fresh tranny fluid and filter. I'm going to check the fluid level today/tomorrow after having driven it a bit. Seems like an easy thing to drain it and fill it again like you suggest Mike.

The transmission is doing great, I guess that chunk wasn't that important. At least it was something "native" to the transmission as compared to that wrench found in the engine valley...

Worst case I'll have to get a rebuilt one down the road. Glad I can at least plan for it

Looks like somebody over-torqued a bolt inside the trans... Ouch!

That actually was my first thought, that it looked like a raised piece where a bolt would go through. When it was over tightened I don't know. I bought the truck in May and this is the first time I opened the transmission.

Those pieces look like part of the clamps that hold the pan on from the outside, how they would get into the filter I have no idea. (maybe somebody at the "filter factory" was bored and wanted the person who changed the filter to wonder where those parts came from.)
